EDUCATORS “ENCOUNTER THE PERSON OF JESUS”

January 21, 2020 by Catholic Elementary Schools of Long Island News & Updates Robustly Catholic Culture

On January 14, 2020, educators from the Catholic elementary schools and two diocesan high schools participated in a theological professional development opportunity.  Thanks to a generous benefactor, the Sophia Institute for Teachers, a Catholic curriculum and professional learning resource, provided a workshop titled, “Encountering the Person of Jesus.”  Over 80 principals and teachers attended the professional development.

The workshop was led by Jose Gonzalez, Senior Director of Professional Development of the Sophia Institute, and Sr. Mary Anne Zuberbueler, OP.  Jose shared strategies for teaching students about Christ while Sr. Mary Anne provided spiritual formation on the themes “Called and Sent” and “Blessed and Broken”.   Through resources that included Sacred Scripture and artwork, the participants actively engaged in lessons they will be able to use with their students.  Each participant received resources to enhance their instruction of religion.  During the professional development day, all gathered together for Mass, celebrated by Fr. Liam McDonald, Chaplain of Holy Trinity Diocesan High School.

“We are grateful to our benefactor and to the Sophia Institute for providing our principals and teachers with this high-quality, faith-based professional development,” said Dr. Kathleen Walsh, Superintendent of Schools.  “Opportunities like this help our educators evangelize to all students and carry out our call for ‘Dramatic Missionary Growth’.”
